Alfred, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (b. 6 August 1844, Berkshire, England-d. 30 July 1900, Coburg, German Empire) was the son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He entered the Royal Navy at age 14 in 1858 as a midshipman; he was promoted to captain in 1866. John William Ramsay (1847-87), eldest son of the 12th Earl of Dalhousie, entered the Navy in 1861. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1867, appointed flag-lieutenant to his father on the Narcissus, but immediately transferred to HMS Galatea, commanded by the Duke of Edinburgh, and remained with the ship on its world cruise, 1869-71.
